A Runner’s Body


 

You don’t have a typical runners body, though?

 

Being in the world of fitness, I have unfortunately had many a comment on my shape and size. Most of the time, it has been a positive one, but as we all know, it is the negative ones that stick like glue.

 

I enjoy running long distance and for so many reasons. You may be able to relate, even with a different sport or hobby. Yes, I am running for performance at the moment, but I also appreciate what running does for me in other areas. So why does size even come into this?

 

As a fitness professional, we are supposed to recognise different body shapes and their strengths. So I do understand when people make an innocent comment on what they know… However, when someone has a passion, I believe we should only let the individual continue doing what they love doing.

 

 

 

The question is…

 

What is a typical runners body?

 

Have you been told that you do not look like a ‘real runner’ because of your shape or size? Have you compared yourself to other runners because of the way they look?

 

If you run, you are a runner. A person who’s heart beats faster whilst turning the legs over, is a runner. We are all very different people and this should not deflect away from the fact that you still are classed as a realĀ runner.

 

 


 

This year, I decided to take my training a little more seriously than I usually would. I wanted to become a faster runner and run a quicker time in the marathon distance and I couldn’t help but think how my ‘shape’ would deter me away from my goal.

 

 

 

A Runner’s Body.

 

I truly believe that if you work hard for something, you will more than likely reach your goals. You may have to work harder than others or make more sacrifices but, the end goal can be achievable. There is the chat about genetics, which does make an impact, but who gives a sh*t if you just want to better your personal self?

 

Your body is what you make of it and if you run, you have a runner’s body. There is no blueprint or outline that defines it, you have to use what you were born with. This is what makes it exciting; this is what makes it a personalĀ challenge. If we only ever tried what we were gifted at, we would never see our full potential.

 

I want to open up the discussion here; what do YOU class as a ‘real runner’? Personally, I think this statement needs to get in the bin. Real runner? A person who is dedicated to the pounding the pavements or roaming the green. A person who puts on their trainers and gets outside to better their body and mind. That is what a real runner is.

 

I have a runners body, because I am a runner.
