Countdown to Chicago

daily goal planner

It is finally here, the peak of marathon training. This is where us runners bash out our last long runs (normally 18-24 miles) and prepare for the taper!

I had planned on hitting the 20 mile mark at the Goodwood Motor Circuit event in West Sussex today (22.09.19). Giving me three weeks until Chicago Marathon. Training had gone well in the lead up and I was excited to get those final miles in the bag.

Although, it wasn’t meant to be.

When it all seemed too good to be true, I got sick. Perfect timing as they say; when the miles really count and getting the time on your feet is a must. I have run the marathon distance in the past, but it is always great to get those longer miles in for that confidence boost. 26.2 miles does not get easier!

Disappointment.

When people have asked me how Chicago marathon training was going, I stuttered. It was going well, really well. So much that when I said the words out loud, I felt like I was jinxing myself. I followed the plan and I enjoyed the routine. I would embrace every workout, regardless of whether it had gone well or not. Lessons were being learnt throughout and I was growing stronger; day by day.

When I got sick, I knew what it was that set things off. I am somewhat disappointed in myself for letting my recovery slip a little. I guess we can all be guilty of having those moments in training, but it is frustrating when it happens. You may train hard for the end result, but without looking after yourself, things will start to crumble.

The question I repeated to myself was; Have I wasted my time?

The short answer is NO.

Believe you can quote

Light at the end of the tunnel.

If you are in the same position, know that you haven’t wasted your time. Remember; consistency is key. Marathon training is never perfect, nor will it ever be; but there is time to get back on track if you slip off schedule.

The Plan…

Health is the ultimate importance, which means that this year, I am going into the marathon without my routinely 20 miler. Scary times!

This also means that I will have to reassess my marathon goals, much to my disappointment. Originally I had a goal A, a goal B and a goal C. Any of these would bag me a PB race; I wanted to aim high! Now, I recon I will be looking at goal C as my main goal. Just got to wait for the 13th of October and see how my body is on the day!

The countdown to Chicago is ON!

So here we are! Three weeks out and I’ll be running my third marathon major. I cannot WAIT! I am back to health; getting myself ready for training and of course, ready for the taper. Have you ran Chicago before?

What is your running experience with illness? Please get in touch, as I will be needing some advice from you all in the run up to the 26.2 in the USA!
