Saint valentines

A letter to my younger self. Valentine’s Day special.

Buddha

Valentine’s Day; whether you love it or loathe it, it is one of the most talked about holidays of the year. It seems that love is in the air and many are frantically buying presents for their loved ones, or making plans to try to impress their newbie lover; In hope that the 14th of February will be a fun and romantic one.

Personally, I have never celebrated Valentine’s Day. I have always been single (mostly that of recent) on the feast of Saint Valentine, so it has always just been another day for me.

Love is a funny one. There are so many aspects to the emotion and we all feel it differently. To this day, I do not know what it is like to love someone so dearly that it hurts from the inside out. Well, there was my first boyfriend; he set the mark for all future relationships. We hung out like best friends, had our first kiss and we shared a lot of time together (as relationships do.) When this ended, I did feel like my whole world fell apart, but at that age, EVERYTHING is magnified. Teenage love is horrible; you learn so much and your needs are completely different to those that I would require as an adult.

I have felt pain since, but nothing in comparison to the first and only love I’ve had.

Which brings me to this post… I have spent many years as a single woman, and I needed to learn something important. The hardest lesson in love I’ve had, is the one for myself, and it is truly the hardest of them all.

I’ve heard the saying “You have to love yourself before you can let anyone else love you” before, and although I don’t think it’s entirely true, I do feel that you have to respect who you are as a person, baggage and all, before you can give your everything to another person.

I have set the bar high for myself. I now have standards that weren’t necessarily there before, and I am proud of who I am, flaws and all. The story that has been written for Emma Joy, are life lessons that have made me who I am today. It is not wrong to put yourself first, because that is all you have at the end of the day.

I love the person that I am today, and yet there’s still more to learn.

💜

So in celebration of Valentine’s Day, I wrote a letter to my younger self. What would I let her know?

Maybe you should give it a go? What would YOU tell the younger version of you? Please share below!

Dearest Emma Joy,

Here are a few bullet points for you to exercise in the future.

  1. It doesn’t matter if most of your clothes are black, it will always be the staple colour of anyone’s wardrobe.
  2. Being different will be embraced when you’re older, keep doing what you’re doing and it will be recognised in a positive way eventually.
  3. Hair colour is just, hair colour. It’s not worth getting upset over the taunts.
  4. Sexuality is fluid. What you are doing is not wrong, it is natural to explore what you’re into. Also, ignore labelling yourself. Love is love after all.
  5. If he wants you in his life, he will make the effort. End of.
  6. Dont regret saying how you felt at the time, wearing your heart on your sleeve can be scary, but if you feel an emotion, say it loud and proud.
  7. If you don’t want to do something, do not do it. Simple.
  8. Take everything with a pinch of salt. Not everyone is as honest as you are. Keep your wits about you, and if it seems too good to be true, it most probably is.
  9. Find what you are passionate about at an early age. Try a little of everything. It only gets harder to pursue it professionally when you get older. (Although not impossible)
  10. If someone tells you that you can’t do something, go out and damn well do it. Life is about pushing boundaries and showing what you’re made of.
  11. He is not worth your tears. He will regret what he did and will tell you about it in years to come.
  12. Yellow doesn’t suit you at ALL. Don’t buy that dress, you’ll never wear it.
  13. Spend more time with family and close friends. You will never know when you can next see them, so share as many memories as possible.
  14. Take risks, it will push you into a world of the unknown.
  15. Drink more water. It cures EVERYTHING.
  16. Look after your body, it is the only one you’ll get.
  17. Smile, you don’t know who is watching.
  18. Eating healthily is not as boring as you think. There is more to life than takeaways and pizza. Well, maybe not pizza…
  19. Write lists; you are a forgetful being, so trust me, it’ll save you a lot of trouble.
  20. When you feel that the world is against you, breath. No matter how scary the jump is, always do what is best for you.

Love yourself always.X
