Do you intake your RDA of vitamins and minerals? Would you say that your diet is well balanced?
In this day and age, it can be difficult to ‘get enough’ from the foods that we eat. We all tend to live a busy lifestyle and nutritious food isn’t a priority for some.
Fast food is a hassle free way to get our calories. Home cooking can often be tasty but simple; it is easy to forget about the importance of nutrition.
When in training, our bodies will require more than those living a sedentary lifestyle. It is always worth keeping track of what you are intaking against your energy expenditure. If you are finding it difficult to ‘eat your greens’ or getting the right foods into your diet, possibly look at supplementation.
Supplements are a quick and easy way to ensure you are getting a mixture of goodness into the body, without the worry. I always say it is best to eat your vitamins, but for most of us, supplementing is a life saver. If you are having a hectic day, or you know that you will be eating away from home then it can be worth getting something in that is quick and easy.
The Protein Works.
When The Protein Works approached me, I had a little look on their website to see what they had to offer. The product that stood out most, to me, was the ‘Super Greens’ pack. I am fairly happy with my diet but I do find that when I am super busy and travelling, I forget to include all of my micros.
This product contains MANY a super green, and as stated on their website…
With over 13 active ingredients – unlike other green shakes – we focused on the optimal quantity so we’ve whittled down to the most potent plant extracts you can find.
Previously, I have trialled and tested matcha and wheatgrass, and had some great results performance wise. There may be no specific reason to this, but I trust that it works for me and I have gone back to these products.
I decided to have a play around with all of the Super Greens flavours (green apple, mandarin orange, tropical punch, cranberry & pomegranate) and here is what I came up with!
Break down of the ingredients in the ‘Super Greens’ batch. (From their website)
Super Greens Blend (80%) [Spirulina Powder, Kale Powder, Wheatgrass Powder, Spinach Powder, Broccoli Powder, Organic Alfalfa Powder, Chlorella (Broken Cell Wall), Beetroot Powder, Moringa Powder, Kelp Powder, Matcha Green Tea, Grape Seed Powdered Extract (95% Proanthocyanidins), Ashwagandha Root Powder]
The Original Way.
I first trialled the Tropical Punch flavoured Super Greens the way they recommended. 3 & a 1/2 scoops (scoop included) mixed with 200-300ml of water (or they also suggest juice).
Very earthy smell but a sweet taste. Straight forward, no nonsense way to drink this product. If you give it a good shake, the texture is easy to drink. Have it first thing in the morning and you’ll go to work with high energy!
As A Morning Shot.
Next up, I tried the Cranberry & Pomegranate flavoured Super Greens as a shot. I put the recommended scoops into a shaker with 150ml-200ml of water and poured it into two shot sized glasses. This is great for a little ‘pick me up’ and I used it prior to my evening run. Really does pack a punch! (MY FAV)
As A Smoothie.
I then tried the Green Apple flavoured Super Greens as a smoothie. I mixed up some of my favourite fruits with the powder (you could also mix in some yoghurt to thicken up the texture)!
Here is the recipe that I used:
1 Banana, 1 Green Apple, 1 Half of a mini Watermelon & a dose of Green Apple Super Greens powder.
